| A New Kind of Hero Saturday, February 14, 2009 Read 2 Corinthians 4:7-11 It was faith that made Abraham able to become a father, even though he was too old and Sarah herself could not have children. He trusted God to keep his promise. -Hebrews 11:11 (TEV) MY heroes are different today than when I was younger. My heroes now are not famous celebrities, sports legends, or members of royal families. My heroes are ordinary people whom God uses in amazing ways. While on a short-term mission trip recently, I found some of these heroes. We had been sent to Rwanda to teach women the basics of the spiritual life. But what we learned from them was much more than what we taught. While they may not have had formal education, the challenges of their life in Africa had taught them more about the spiritual life and becoming spiritual heroes than we could ever teach them. God has created heroes in the difficult world in which our Rwandan sisters live. God has worked through their challenging circumstances - widowhood, AIDS, genocide a decade ago that killed many of their families and friends - to build their faith. The African women we met during our few days there have overcome devastating circumstances, built vibrant ministries, and grown in their faith because they, like Abraham and Sarah, have experienced the truth that God is faithful. Gina Baldridge (Texas, USA) Prayer O God, help us to see and learn from the heroes all around - the ordinary people who do your work. Amen. Thought for Today Who are my heroes?
