The scripture lesson for the recent youth-led worship service was Matthew 20. This is a story
of a landowner that paid a group of day laborers the agreed-upon wage regardless of the
number of hours worked or the time each worker was hired. The “first and last” or the fair
share concepts of work are the same for all who work, serve, and volunteer, their time in
mission. Accepting others as equals through service and mission changes our perspective of
provision, resources, and values. I am inviting us to seek and intentional balance of body,
mind, and spirit or our head, hands, and hearts as we serve and volunteer through the many
ministries of St Andrew.
We live in a culture where the concepts of fairness, justice, faith in action are communicated in
bits, bites, blogs, and through broadband connections. Our lives reflect the social, political,
and economic norms of the day. God’s offer of love justice, peace, community, and
relationship is available to the children and youth as well as the oldest among us. We must be
careful not to superimpose our sense of fairness for what “we do” in mission and service as
more of less valuable than the work of others. If you are looking for a way to use your time
wisely that will make a difference in your life and positively impact other—you are invited to
make a connection with St. Andrew through prayer, worship, study, mission, and service.
