Spiritual Toolbox Experience
|
“Experience is the best teacher.” I have heard this adage used in speeches and lectures to
challenge people to gain knowledge through direct participation. Experience might not necessarily
be the "best" teacher but some of our most unforgettable learning is shaped by experience.
Experience is both individual and corporate and is shaped by nature and nurture. Wesley
described faith and its assurance as "a sure trust and confidence in the mercy of God through our
Lord Jesus Christ, and a steadfast hope of all good things to be received at God’s hand.” I learned
at an early age that this assurance is the gift of GRACE-God’s Right-relationship at Christ Expense.
“New life in Christ” is what we as Christian believers called United Methodist mean when we speak of
“experience. Examining our experience as the community of believers, studying the Scripture as the
primary source for learning, honoring customs of the past and creating new traditions offer us
“teachable moments” to practice our faith. The Christian community is a place where we sort out
what we may or may not learn from the experiences of life. The Christian way of life is a varied
experience that must not be defined as good, better, best, or normative. Call, write, or email me with
your questions comments, or stories, about “EXPERIENCE “ or your “teachable moments” when
experience was your best teacher. We are adding “tradition” to our “spiritual toolbox” during our
September sermon series. Join us as we discover of rediscover what we believe about God, the
church, beliefs, values, faith and practice.
Blessings and Peace,
